Standards for Accreditation - Public Schools

Standards for Accreditation
for public K-12 schools, districts, centers, and programs based in the US

The Standards for Accreditation are a research-based set of practices and concepts reflective of best practices which provide a template for school communities and visiting teams to identify the unique strengths and needs of each school, district, center, and program participating in the accreditation process. Considered to be living documents, the Standards of Accreditation are reviewed and revised, as necessary, every five years. The Standards reflect current trends in research on public education without espousing one particular mode of thought. The award of Accreditation signifies that the school has met the Standards for Accreditation at an acceptable level and is committed to maintain those Standards.

Standards for Accreditation Updates, Spring 2025

In March of 2025 the NEASC Commission on Public Schools approved updates to the Standards for Accreditation for Public Schools in order to establish greater clarity on the curriculum expectations of member schools. Specifically the Principle of Effective Practice 2.2 and Foundational Element 2.2a within Standard 2/Student Learning were updated. These revisions provide consistent direction to schools and visiting teams, so all parties can analyze schools’ alignment with the Student Learning Standard, draw appropriate conclusions, and identify next steps.

We are pleased to offer resources to help member schools develop written curriculum, meet Standard 2/Student Learning Foundational Element 2.2a, and optimize alignment with the Principle of Effective Practice 2.2.
