Accreditation Protocol for Independent Schools in the US
NEASC’s accreditation protocol for independent schools is rooted in standards crafted by educators for educators. These standards provide the benchmark for institutional and educational excellence. Accreditation by NEASC ensures that your school not only meets but consistently exceeds the highest levels of quality and accountability.
The NEASC process is mission-driven, child-centered, and focused on holistic student development. It goes beyond traditional accreditation by focusing on impacts and providing ongoing support for continuous improvement. This self-reflective process allows schools to assess their practices, strengthen their alignment with core values, and implement effective, long-term growth strategies.
Accreditation Cycle

The NEASC Visiting Team truly invested themselves in the process and in getting to know our community; their passion for quality education, mission-based culture, and healthy and vibrant schools was obvious to all of us.

The 10-year process
Pre-Accreditation
The Self‑Study and data collection serve as the starting point for accreditation by establishing a clear purpose and building a shared, evidence‑based understanding of the school’s mission, practices, and impact across the community.

Accreditation Cycle
The peer‑led campus visits are structured in two parts to balance operational assurance with educational depth:
The Foundation Visit focuses on operational viability by confirming governance, finances, leadership, and systems necessary for a school to function responsibly and sustainably.
The Program Visit then builds on that baseline by examining the quality, coherence, and effectiveness of the school’s programs in relation to the accreditation standards.

Two-Year Update
The Two‑Year Update focuses on the progress toward both the Standards‑based and Major Recommendations to help school communities prioritize improvement efforts and monitor meaningful advancement since the full accreditation review.

Five-Year Update
The Five‑Year Update centers on strategic vision, sustainability, and future readiness, helping school communities assess organizational health and position their work for a successful next decennial accreditation cycle.
