Commitment to NEASC Goals Restores Foreign Language Program

Samuel L. Wagner Middle School - Winterport, ME

-- Contributed by Richard Glencross, Ed.D., Principal

Samuel L. Wagner Middle School’s involvement with NEASC has played an important role in our development as a school. A commitment to educational excellence and our tradition of respect and pride in ones self will continue to guide us in the coming school year. I invite you to visit our website ( to learn more about our school.

This year we remain committed to our NEASC goals. These include a recommitment, in our school and district, to expanding foreign language opportunities for students. Budget challenges in recent years resulted in the elimination of middle school foreign language in our district. I am especially pleased to note that we will reintroduce full-time foreign language into our middle school curriculum this fall.

Renewal has been the result of a multi-year planning process involving collaboration between our school board, district administration and school community. Beginning September 1, Wagner students in grades 6 through 8 will receive Spanish instruction for three days each week. In addition, exploratory Spanish instruction will also begin this fall for district 4th and 5th graders for one day each week. This is the first step of a multi-year plan to develop a comprehensive K-12 foreign language program of instruction in our district. This is an exciting opportunity for us that is a recommitment to focus on our NEASC goals and helps us better prepare students for participation in a global society.

We are fortunate to be a member of the NEASC community. Our commitment to education, and NEASC’s support, are valuable to us as we continually strive to improve teaching and learning opportunities. On behalf of myself, and the Wagner staff, I wish you well.
