CIHE Workshop #1: Enabling Appreciative Inquiry as Part of Accreditation Periodic Reviews
Presenters: Lane A. Glenn, President, Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA; Judith Kamber, Dean of Professional Development, Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA

Moderator: Patricia Maguire Meservey, CIHE Commission Vice Chair, President, Salem State University, Salem, MA

Northern Essex Community College has committed itself to being a “strengths-based” institution. This involves a philosophy for student success, organizational planning, and employee development that emphasizes our strengths, assets, and accomplishments as a way of meeting and overcoming our challenges—including those identified through periodic accreditation reviews. The “strengths-based” approach equips us with some important tools and techniques for planning and team development—like Appreciative Inquiry, StrengthsQuest, and the freedom to “SOAR”—that have helped us (and other colleges) create a self-study process and product that are broadly engaging, energizing, and focused on meaningful projections and outcomes.

Presentation Materials: Appreciative Inquiry-ish Approach to the Chapters, NECC NEASC Self-Study Timeline 2009-2011, NECC NEASC Self-Study Retreat Agenda, New Ways of Seeing: SOAR, SOAR Activity, What is Appreciative Inquiry?

Moderator: Carol L. Anderson, Associate Director, CIHE

At CIHE/NEASC three years ago, three Vermont State Colleges’ academic officers described a system-wide protocol for academic program reviews and assessment. Although our 2009 presentation took account of continuing challenges, back on the five college campuses we discovered that we had vastly underestimated faculty dissatisfaction with the then-current system. Supported by a two-year grant from the Davis Foundation, a VSC team composed mostly of faculty worked toward an exemplary review system that seeks continuous improvements in programs and their assessment. This presentation charts the movement toward a continuous improvement system—away from merely a determination of program status—and reports on the extent to which faculty and others have embraced the rather far-reaching changes.
